1 week agoThe Turkish Public Prosecutor's Office has begun investigating Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and 78 other detainees on terrorism and corruption charges, amid a tense atmosphere and mass demonstrations and protests across Turkey against his arrest, European and international condemnation, and demands for fair judicial procedures.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized the recent protests, accusing the Republican People's Party (CHP) of ignoring corruption issues and inciting the street, and stressing that his government would not be distracted by the opposition's "theatrics."

Following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, exchange rates rose in the morning hours.
Göksu Bayraktaroğlu, who served as Murat Ongun's Private Secretary for 5 years and later worked as Project Development Coordinator at Şişli Municipality, was also detained within the scope of the investigation carried out against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
Turkish media reported that detention orders had been issued for around 100 other individuals connected to Imamoglu, including Istanbul district mayors, politicians, and prominent dissident journalist Ismail Saymaz.
